Jad Atoui – It will take forever

The sound design on this album is absolutely brilliant, and this noise-based creation has a soul of post-rock; it kicks off with intense dynamics before settling into the dreamlike gentleness of a whistling outro that softly fades away.
Then the textural glitch – granular, I think – becomes more subtle, with a synthetic pad taking charge of the piece’s melodic aspect before the choppy synth and the abstract, almost messy rhythm lay the foundations for a few distorted elements to tear through the soundscape in a complex, meticulously crafted structure. An overdriven finale, then a returning silence.
Corrosive is the continuation of the narrative, playing with the stereo image and an atypical rhythm.
We find ourselves in a production that feels more distant in space, yet the metal persists.
Then comes the noise-driven apocalypse: a man screams amidst the din, a climate of war before a wall of more melodic sounds; one can sense the cathartic nature of the piece, which resonates inside and sets free. The power is of another kind, a different substance—fluid and plucky. Sporadically, the bass lines rumble, then allow the track to end gracefully.
The next track is dominated by a prominent low end, but the metallic harmonics soon take over with a slightly over-driven feel, and the piece once again features abstract percussion; the sound is highly refined, and the work becomes increasingly complex, whilst maintaining a sense of classy restraint – no easy excesses. The mix is clear and precise; the texture truly stimulating to listen to, full of surprises, wild, modern, spontaneous and daring.
An ambient softness enhanced by notes from a synth that sounds more purely analogue to my ears; the harmonies are unusual but yet familiar, nostalgic, warm and deep. The roll returns, like the staccato notes of a digitalized cello, manipulated to blend with the overall tone of the production.
We breathe; it’s subtle, ever-shifting, yet punctuated by a kick drum that marks the sequences. As they spill over and shift out of sync with one another, their edges become intertwined and indistinguishable, adding to the album’s magic and fluidity. Landmarks are scarce, making them all the more precious. Yet we never lose our way.
The sound continues to evolve, becoming heart-wrenching as it gradually retreats towards a new wall of noise. Yet a melodic element always remains, soaring, keeping us grounded whilst everything takes off, then lands on a carpet painted by the master of sound’s brush for nearly 35 minutes, bringing the piece to an end that I leave who will read this the entire discovery.
Surprise is the order of the day throughout; from the very first listen, you’re immediately certain you’re dealing with an adventurous soul who knows their craft inside out. Given the sheer abundance of material, it’s really the variety of sounds – whilst maintaining cohesion and consistency in their substance – and the quality of the narrative that stand out; not a single note out of place, in my opinion. the perfect balance between distortion and subdued tones, never harsh – yet there’s a lot going on here; it’s teeming with sound, a feast for the ears much like a vivid painting or visual that gives you that ‘wow’ effect the moment your eyes land on it. A constant pleasure to listen to, with not a second’s respite – in the best possible sense; you’re taken firmly and deliberately in hand, carried along by the trust that quickly builds between the artist and the listener. You’ll soon realize that disappointment isn’t part of the experience, so you simply sit back and enjoy.
A truly outstanding achievement, technically flawless from production right through to the mix and mastering – which is seamless enough that it’s easy to forget – good point, dynamic and natural, just like the production itself.
Total consistency right down to the beautiful cover, which forms an inseparable part of the project.
Thank you for the impact and power of this impressive collection of pieces, and all my wishes for the future.
