Paint on my body, spines on my head—mushrooms alter vigilance but heighten sensitivity and awareness of the forest. I chase after fragments of memories among the trees, brushing against the leaves and rolling through roots to bring the crucial information to the surface. Traumatic dissociation breaks out in a groan as I crawl, out of breath—I know—and my screams are the purge of years spent in a haze between denial and self-destruction. I had to go through this—a terrifying shortcut—to finally accept the unthinkable. When innocent naivety makes the violence of a single moment inconceivable, we’ll keep forgetting a thousand times over, feeling sick to stomachs, bodies and hearts turned upside down. But this time I’m walking on the surface, in the light of a full moon, in balance. I’ll have to find confidence in my own resources to find constancy in acceptance; then incredulity will become certainty to heal the wound. Blood has flowed, a symbol of a death full of life that leaves me a path to build myself up. Perched on the tall pole, I’m standing on the totem, my head in the wind; the noise falls silent in the face of extreme concentration; my gaze fixed straight toward the horizon—my path is set, I will create until I can no longer do so.
